FEA (Finite Element Analysis is an exciting way to analyze and predict the behaviour of structures ...

A FE study has the following steps:

  • Define a 2D or 3D geometry
  • On that geometry define a mesh
  • On that mesh define:
    • A FEM (Finite Element Model)
    • Material properties
    • Boundary conditions (e.g. Loads, ...)
  • Define a solution
  • Solve the solution>
  • Interpret the data from the solution
For the sake of clarity, the deformations in the example at the left are exagerrated ... (At the left you see the front, at the right the top view of an elliptical beam loaded on bending and torsion)

The reaction of a composite parts to external loads in 3D is quite complex, due to their composite, orthotropic and multilayered nature. Analytical solutions are elaborate but not impossible, at least for very simple geometries.
